The purpose of this site is to provide awareness to the public about over-exploitation in the Pacific Northwest Oceans. The oceans of the Pacific Northwest are a diverse habitat that is home to a variety of different species of fish. Unfortunately, some of these species of fish are in danger of dying out due to over-exploitation (Coleman, 2002). |
What is over-exploitation?
Over-exploitation is when the amount and rate of fish being harvested is greater than the ability of the fish to reproduce and replenish the population that was lost. Some people may believe that it isn't possible to diminish the population of fishes due to the abundance of fishes in the ocean (SF Watch). However, what people do not realize is that certain stock of species are already being harvested to very low populations. This website will educate readers about what really goes on behind the scenes (Lackey, 2000). |
